Football October 1 & 2

I've been a little distracted by the end of the American League baseball season (as I write this, 3 teams are fighting for 2 postseason spots) to get everything together about this weekend. I haven't even finished watching Matchday 2 Champions League that I've taped! Have faith, there is plenty to take in--take a look at the link for SoccerTV.com. Not the nicest formatting, but the information is there.

I will be tuning in to some of the European leagues this weekend, not sure what, and the FIFA U17 Final is a must-see, too.

Champions League Matchday 1 Review

Matchday 1 TV coverage began with two quickly-paced games featuring defending champs Liverpool winning at UCL first-timers Betis and last year's quarterfinalists Olympique Lyonnais making Real Madrid look very ordinary. Norway's Rosenborg BK took 3 points at Olympiacos CFP in Greece for the most emphatic surprise; the closest near-surprise was England's Arsenal needing a goal in the 92nd minute to beat Swiss outsiders FC Thun.

English Premier League Matchday 6

The English Premier League is, not surprisingly, the domestic league which receives the most attention and TV coverage in Victoria. You can find several games each week broadcast on CTV Sportsnet and The Score, and both networks have weekly preview shows as well. The various highlight shows always have EPL coverage, too.

FIFA Magazine-September 2005

The September 2005 FIFA magazine, the one with a David Beckham mugshot on the cover, has some nice coverage of the Confederations Cup, the U20 Championships, as well as some other nice features.

This is the first copy I've bought; I've been hesitant as the magazine has a lot of white space in it. I admit that I was enticed by FIFA adding the updated Laws of the Game booklet in the cover price. Upon reading it, it is a better value than I anticipated as the amount of advertising is reasonable, the articles are well-written and the photography is excellent. The back of the magazine contains press-time World Cup qualifying results and tables and FIFA rankings.

FIFA Magazine can be found at Munro's and Chapters in downtown Victoria; it's published monthly and costs $8.95.

Champions League Magazine Shows

TSN broadcasts two magazine-style shows produced by UEFA.

UEFA Champions League Weekly gives previews of the games, profiles of players and managers, and other human-interest type stuff. It's usually shown before the Tuesday game and in the middle of the night.
